A group of Year 7 pupils at Blackpool's Collegiate High School are hoping a more "hands on approach" will help them get to grips with their maths and reading skills.

As literacy levels in the UK fall with a new report showing some 11 year old boys have the reading age of a 7 year old, Collegiate is setting about a new way of making sure they're brought up to speed by taking them out of the traditional classroom environment.

On Thursday pupils planned, cooked and served a special Christmas meal for VIP's.....but they had to cost it all out and produce menus etc themselves.

It could be seen as a return to a more practical curriculum as in the case of the old Secondary Modern schools of the 1960's which taught academic skills...but in a more targetted practical way.

Andy Mitchell has been along to find out more about it was Collegiate's Headmistress Cherry Ridgway....
