Jail for man who raped child

A Blackpool man who raped a young child and photographed himself committing the crime has today been jailed for nine years.

James Felton's offending came to light because of something the girl said at school. The photograph of the rape was found on his mobile phone.

Police also found extreme pornography on the phone as well as an animated movie featuring several characters, one of whom had a child's face.

The thirty four year old defendant of Newton Drive, Blackpool had pleaded guilty to one charge of rape, plus two others of possessing extreme pornography and one of possessing a prohibited image of a child.

Felton's barrister said the rape had been a moment of utter madness.

He had genuine remorse for what he had done.

Judge Robert Altham, in passing sentence, said the violation and degradation of the child had been markedly increased by his photographing what he was doing.

In a report compiled by the probation service, Felton protested that he had no sexual interest in children.

But the judge told him no other conclusion could sensibly be drawn and the defendant had a sexual interest in children.

Felton will be on the sex offenders for life, banned from working with children and subject to a sexual offences prevention order.
