Jail for street attack men

Friday, January 27th 2012 00:00

Four young men have been put behind bars for their involvement in a street incident where others carried out a what a judge called "sickening and gratuitous" assault.

Four young men have been put behind bars for their involvement in a street incident where others carried out a what a judge called "sickening and gratuitous" assault.

Three people were subjected to an unprovoked attack - with at least two of them being knocked unconscious.

A teenager involved in a scuffle at the scene on Caunce Street, Blackpool was yesterday (Thurs) given twelve months youth custody.

Jordan Harris, aged nineteen, of Troutbeck Crescent, Blackpool had admitted affray.

Another teenager, Christopher McGowan, also nineteen, of South Square, Blackpool received a nine months sentence of detention. He had admitted using threatening behaviour and was in breach of a community order.

The two other defendants also appearing for sentence at Preston Crown Court each received terms of three months detention.

Keifer Chesworth, twenty, of South Square, Blackpool and Grant Lennox, nineteen, of Elizabeth Street, Blackpool had both admitted threatening behaviour.

Two men who played primary roles in what took place that night have previously been given prison terms of around two years.

CCTV footage of the incident was played at court yesterday (Thurs). As he passed sentence, the judge, Mr Justice Butterfield said "I have watched a DVD recording of what I can only describe as a sickening incident of gratuitous violence taking place on the streets of Blackpool".

That night in August 2010 three men were subjected to what the court heard was a completely unprovoked attack. Two were knocked unconscious.

The four defendants had encouraged those doing the kicking and the stamping, abusing the victims of the violence.

The judge, Mr Justice Butterfield, said it was a very serious example of a public order offence and only custody could be justified.
