Man hooked on heroin since he was 14

Friday, July 13th 2012 01:00

A MAN who had been hooked on heroin since the age of 14 failed to go to a drug assessment appointment.

Jason Kear, aged 41, of Shaftsbury Avenue, North Shore, admitted theft of lager and not attending a follow-up drug assessment.

He was fined £50 but could not pay immediately so Blackpool magistrates said the 24 hours he had already spent in custody would serve instead of the financial penalty.

Prosecutor, Tracy Yates, said on June 23 Kear was identified from CCTV footage stealing three cans of lager from a shop on Egerton Road, and was arrested on June 28.

He tested positive for drugs and was given an appointment for a follow-up drug assessment, which he did not attend.

Kear had a criminal record of 237 previous offences.

Hugh Pond, defending, said: "He has been a heroin addict from the age of about 14 and tried every type of drug.

"Today he tested negative for cocaine and opiates. A negative drug test is a great thing for him. He is trying his best to remain drug free."
