Today, Ged & I went off to the Grant Smith Physio Therapy Centre in Lytham to find out about the Y:Active Therapy Services & what's on offer for YMCA members. We were greeted by Mark Smith who manages the centre & explained a bit about what it is they do, he also revealed that the business was started by his father in Lytham 50 years ago! We had a tour of the centre & couldn't believe how big the place was, they have a gym area, studio, hydrotherapy pool area as well as plenty of treatment rooms & soon enough Ged & I found ourselves in one of them!
We met Sonia the Podiatrist who gave both of our feet the once over & explained how they offer a complete foot care service covering everything from diagnosis right through to treatment & ongoing advice. Sonia also explained how she's able to help prevent injury & mentioned that sometimes people come in to be treated for what they believe is a back problem for example & it's actually a problem with their feet. After leaving the Podiatry area, we were introduced to Andy, who treated us both to a Sports Massage.
Both Ged & I were aching after our classes yesterday so neither of us could wait for Andy to get started! We both agreed that we could have easily fallen asleep as Andy worked his magic & the time seemed to fly by. Afterwards, we were both shattered, really relaxed & much less achy! Neither of us could believe how much we enjoyed it & left the Grant Smith Physio Therapy Centre feeling amazing!

There's some really great deals available to YMCA members & both Ged & I would heartily recommend you treat yourself! So, now all that's left to do is decide what we're going to keep up with in 2012?!

Week 2 of Presenter fit club has seen me participate in Triathlon on Wednesday and the next day I was achy I mean really achy, so on Thursday when I was told to take on Thai Chi at St Anne's I can admit I wasn't looking forward to it.
I'd never seen Thai Chi so I thought it was a martial art like Karate or Judo but after watching a few videos it was very slow and a perfect way to relax and energise your body, mind and spirit. When I arrived I was greeted by Dora the instructor who talked me through Thai chi and it's benefits and some amazing stories of where people have been struggling to walk after an accident and through Thai Chi have become fit and well again, I have to admit I'm always sceptical when it comes to things like this but I'm always up for giving things a go.

I was in a class of about 15-20 and at first I wondered what was going on as we were doing moves like parting the clouds and snake puts out its tongue, but after a while you really get into the zone and the teaching of Thai Chi and have to admit the class was about 1 hour 15 minutes long and by the end of the session I was converted, I felt so relaxed and my aches and pains from the Triathlon training on Wednesday seemed to have gone.
Can't wait till the next session, for more information on Presenter Fit Club Click Here

Week 2 of presenter fit club and I was off to YMCA Kirkham Rural Splash for Triathlon training. I have seen and heard a lot about triathlons and have to be the most difficult race to compete in, so to do triathlon training as you can imagine I knew that it was going to be hard.
I turned up at Kirkham to be greeted by my instructor Rob and fellow trainer Pete to take part in the day's session, first of all we had to get on the bike and do 4 minutes at a relaxed pace to get our heart rate set then after that 4 minutes of cycling which should push our heart rate up to ¾ level, and repeat this for 30 minutes. I found this tough but I was pleased that I could keep up with the other guys and completed the full 30 minutes.
After this we went straight onto the treadmill with no breaks in-between to complete 3k with interval training, This included walking, jogging,3/4 sprints and flat out sprinting to make up the 3k target, this was hard very hard in fact, and after I had completed the treadmill session I was shattered but we weren't finished.

The last 30 minutes of the class we participated in a 30 minute circuit training session, we had about 10-12 different exercises including burpees, squat thrusts, bicep curls and other agonising exercises over the 30 minute spell, we did a full 12 sets then rested for 60 seconds then another 12 sets then rested then another, I can say now at this point I was about to keel over but thank fully that was it we ended with some stretches I was happy just to be lying down.
Reading this you might think not a chance I'm doing that but I can honestly say yeah it's hard but for fitness and a workout there's nothing better and I will be back next Wednesday and hoping to improve week by week.

Body Combat challenges all strengths and builds with moves which mix boxing and martial arts so appeals to anyone who wants to de-stress, burn loads of calories and tone every part of their body at the same time!
I would say head to this class if you have had a bad day at work all the kicking and punching and aggression that comes out in this workout is perfect as a stress reliever, the music is awesome and really motivational so the time goes so quickly. Sue the instructor is so supportive and encourages you right the way through so you enjoy the whole workout and her energy and passion for the workout really comes through and she really gets you pumped up both before and during the class.

Have to admit I had mixed feelings heading to Body Combat but really enjoyed it, high energy, burns lots of calories, de-stress and well worth a visit is how I would sum the session up, I think if you try it once you will be hooked.
