WW1 explosion on Blackpool beach - 100 years after the war

The bomb squad had to be called to the beach yesterday after a 'pom-pom' shell was found.

Coastguard Rescue Officers were called to reports of a possible ordnance on the beach opposite the Glitter Ball in Blackpool.

Maritime and Coastguard Agency CRO's and Blackpool Council's Beach Patrol were first on scene who confirmed it to be an unexploded ordnance.

The Royal Logistics Corps Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were called who transferred the 1 pound Pom Pom shell to Lytham St Annes.

Lancashire Police - Blackpool Police Officers set up a safety cordon where a controlled explosion took place.
